Chess Coach Chris

Chess Coach Chris has loved the game of chess since learning it from his grandfather as a child. He was been trained in children’s chess curriculum in the greater Atlanta area while working in various schools over the past 4 years. Coach Chris and wife Megan run Chess for Champs to bring the love of chess to all, through individual & group lessons, tournaments, camps, plus a chess club for the community.

Chess Coach Marcel

When Chess Coach Marcel is not teaching chess around Metro Atlanta schools, he can be found at our Chess Sunday Funday Class! Coach Marcel has been trained in chess instruction for children and has been a chess player for many decades.

Chess Coach Zoe Colier

After graduating from the University of North Georgia in 2019, Zoe has worked as a science and math teacher, private tutor, camp counselor, and cognitive skills trainer. She loves helping kids build confidence through learning and motivation, and believes some of the best learning happens through hands-on activities.

A lifelong fan of puzzles, games, and strategy, Zoe enjoys activities that strengthen memory, logic & reasoning, and problem-solving skills. She even attended a kids’ chess camp herself as a student, making it especially meaningful to now support young players from the other side of the board. Zoe is thrilled to combine her passion for brain-training, mentorship, and play as she helps students think critically, have fun, and fall in love with chess.

Chess Coach Chris Simons

Chris has been teaching in schools & directing tournaments in the Metro Atlanta area since 2016. He’s best known for providing chess opportunities through youth development organizations including The Boy Scouts of America, Gresham Park Recreation Center, and Georgia State University. Chris is also an active tournament player ranked in the top 12% of tournament players in the United States. In his spare time, Chris volunteers at chess clubs to encourage players of all ages to compete in tournaments.

“Through Chess I learned that I am capable–that I can do great things if I put my mind to it. Sometimes I get to see my students discover their own potential, they start to put plans into action outside of chess too, and we all enjoy the benefits of their discovery. — Chris Simons”

Assistant Megan,
Artist & Elementary Teacher

Megan loves working with young chess students, especially when it comes to making crafts and art or playing indoor or outdoor games. When she is not helping kids at chess, Megan works at Lilburn Elementary where she has helped the school gain an inclusive playground, outdoor learning space, a mural, an outdoor track, and more outdoor seating.

Wonderful Chess Mentor for Our 4-Year-Old

We are incredibly grateful to have found such a patient, skilled, and passionate chess master Chris to guide our 4-year-old son’s journey into the world of chess. It’s amazing to see how much progress our child has made in such a short time. The lessons are not only fun and engaging but also tailored perfectly to a young learner’s attention span and understanding.

The way mentor Chris breaks down complex ideas into playful strategies makes learning chess feel like an exciting adventure. Our child looks forward to every session and is beginning to develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills, all while having a great time.

Thank you so much Chris for nurturing our child’s interest in chess with such dedication and kindness. We truly appreciate the positive impact you are making!

Increased my Elo quick.

Chris explains thing so simply and clearly. The way he sees the game you can tell he knows what he’s talking about. I recommend to players wanting to improve.

Sunday Funday was awesome!

We had the best experience at Sunday Funday with Coach Chris and Megan. My son is 7 and he learned a ton and had a blast! We will definitely be back!

Angela Esposito

Wonderful Experience!

My son enjoyed the overall experience. We were impressed with how well the coach engaged with the students and made sure they understood what they were learning. We also appreciated the snack time and individual play time. They even gave the kids a prize. It was a great experience and my son is excited to return.

Shae Sankofa

Response from Chess For Champs

Thank you so much for your kind words, Shae! It’s wonderful to hear that your son enjoyed the experience and felt engaged in the lessons. We believe that learning chess should be both fun and enriching, and we’re so glad the prize and snack time added to the overall enjoyment. It’s always a pleasure to see young players excited to return and continue their chess journey. We look forward to welcoming you both back soon!

Coach Chris

Send your kids to chess!

My daughter loves taking chess lessons with Chris. Every Sunday she gets to learn about chess, make new friends, and build her confidence. We could not be happier with the decision to enroll her in classes with Chris.
